![]() The only difference is, making friends here works a little bit differently to real life, as it usually involves taking on a Pokemon at their favourite game, and beating them so badly that they declare their undying friendship. This "making friends" idea forms the obligatory 'Gotta Catch 'Em All' component necessary for any good Pokemon game, as scattered around the land of the Pokepark are dozens of 'mon, eager to make friends with a Pokemon just like you. In order to open the portals to different regions of the Wish Park, which let you go back, and free to Pokemon trapped inside, you'll need to enlist the help of your friends, who can join you in "wishing" for the way to open - the more friends you have, the easier it'll be to get the portal to open (you have to shake the Wii Remote to wish it open). These four make up the playable Pokemon in the game, and each has own special skill - whether it's swimming as Oshawott, smashing through big boulders as Tepig or leaping higher as Snivy, and you can switch between each using the A Button.ĭespite there being a spooky, impending end of the world scenario overlying the events in the Wish Park (as told by legendary Pokemon Zekrom and Reshiram), PokePark 2 is basically a tale of friendship. ![]() Why they're doing this we don't know at first, but being the ever helpful guy he is, Pikachu sets off to get to the bottom of things and free all the captured critters, joining up with Pokemon Black & White other starter Pokemon, Oshawott, Snivy and Tepig along the way. The story here is suitably odd - a bunch of dark Pokemon are planning to kidnap and hypnotise all the Pokemon in the PokePark, by leading them through a poster into a land called the 'Wish Park', where they'll be stuffed full of hypno-cake and captivated by a dance or two. You'd have to have a heart of stone to watch the opening sequence without cracking even a little smile - and although it's aimed at children, that doesn't mean adults can't enjoy it, too. Following a similar format, it's a veritable smorgasbord of smiling faces and happy Pokemon, with a strong focus on the value of friendship. Pokepark 2: Wonder Beyond isn't one of those main games in the series (we've got to wait for the upcoming Pokemon Black and White Version 2 for that), but instead, is a spin-off aimed firmly at children, especially those who are fans of the TV series, and the sequel to last year's Pokepark Wii: Pikachu's Big Adventure.

Getting to that point starts at the beginning of the filmmaking process while the characters and their environments are being conceived. It adds a layer of believability, a greater sense of gravity to the situations scripted in the film. This approach to make the appearance of the film look like it was photographed by a cinematographer rather than colored by someone filling in shapes with a Wacom tablet and pen is key to final aesthetic in Ratatouille. Like all the Pixar films before it, it avoids the overtly saturated and segregated coloring, or unnaturally elastic character movements sometimes associated with computer-animated films, and instead boasts a visual look that resembles a well-photographed live action-film. Ratatouille also excels in the area of color and design. ![]() ![]() As unusual a setup as having a rat prepare food might seem, under director/writer Brad Bird’s care, the film moves with real conviction and contains something rather innovative - a screenplay that blends live-action storytelling and animated characters. With a premise that often defies convention, Ratatouille tells the tale of a full-grown rat named Remy whose passions in life take him from his family’s home in the French countryside to the kitchen of a fine Parisian restaurant where he becomes, of all things, a Master Chef. That Pixar’s Ratatouille, like the tale of artistry it tells, produces great art in unexpected places. While the film delivered everything the fans were waiting for, there was something else they got, something many film critics picked up on immediately. The eighth feature film from Pixar, the industry’s leading computer animation studio, was immediately embraced by kids, parents and moviegoers alike as one of the best films of the year. ![]() Brad Bird’s highly anticipated second effort for Pixar, Ratatouille opened wide on June 29, 2007. ![]() Styles and Tomlinson have, or at the least used to have, a very obvious friendship. "Larry" has existed almost as long as the band itself Thus, the internet's biggest boy band ship name is "Larry Stylinson," or just Larry for short. If you combine the names "Harry" and "Louis," you get "Larry." If you combine the names "Styles" and "Tomlinson," you get "Stylinson." Which brings us to One Direction and Styles and Tomlinson. These days, you can be part of a fandom for a TV show, film, franchise, book, or band and never interact with people outside your ship. The ship name is a huge part of how people self-identify in fandom. If I ship Glee's Kurt and Blaine, I say I ship Klaine. In the post-'90s world of fandom, shippers usually label their favorite hypothetical relationships with a unique name, usually a portmanteau of some sort. For instance, if I really wanted Mulder and Scully to kiss when I was watching The X-Files, I might say that I really ship Mulder and Scully, or I might say I love the Mulder/Scully ship. "Ship" in this context can be both a verb and a noun. ![]() In fandom terms, shipping generally means rooting for two fictional characters, or in some cases real people, to get together. To understand what's happening in the One Direction fandom, you have to understand what shipping is. Cooper Neill/Getty Images for iHeartMedia What is Larry Stylinson? To fans like Courtney and Jorie, Styles's bird tattoo is crucial evidence in favor of one of the internet's most fascinating and convoluted conspiracy theories: the widespread belief among One Direction fans that Styles and Tomlinson are in love with each other. The birds' size difference is said to represent the size difference between Styles and Tomlinson - and also, doesn't the bird on the right clearly have Styles's slanted eyebrows? The smaller bird on the left represents his fellow band member Louis Tomlinson (sometimes called Tommo). According to their theory, the bird on the right, the larger one, represents Styles. Look closely at the photo above: The bird on the right is slightly larger than the bird on the left, and if you squint, you'll notice it also has a straighter, slantier hood marking where its eyebrow might be.įor millions of Directioners, these two little birds are deeply symbolic. "Jorie is getting what has been deemed the 'Harry' one and I am getting the one deemed 'Louis,'" Courtney tells Vox, "due to me calling her Tommo and her calling me Haz."Ĭourtney is referring to the slight differences in the two birds as they appear below Styles's collarbone. (One Direction's other contender for "hottest," Zayn Malik, famously left the band in 2015 and recently released a record-breaking solo album.) Styles has covered his body with tattoos, but this one - at least to a large subsection of One Direction fans - has special significance. Sometimes called Haz, Styles is the perpetually tousled hunky one, often inaccurately portrayed as the band's lead singer mainly by virtue of being deemed the hottest. In fact, here they are as seen on one incredibly famous chest: that of One Direction band member Harry Styles. The tattoos will commemorate their friendship - but they also carry a much deeper meaning, even though at first glance they're just a pair of cute little birds. These days they go to shows together about three times a week. A pair of 22-year-olds from Texas, the two met a few years ago at a concert, bonded over their love of the same bands, and have been best friends ever since. This summer, Courtney and Jorie are planning to get matching tattoos. ![]() Based on this fact, and the fact that del Toro has been dropping hints about the sequel's development for some time now, you'd expected Pacific Rim 2 to be a done deal already. monsters movie Pacific Rim, it's understandable that Legendary Pictures would begin planning for a sequel, and had already commissioned a sequel script from Travis Beacham by December 2012. ![]() Russell's "Three Kings," another film set during a modern military operation. With tight-as-a-drum direction by John Moore, making his feature debut after a career in commercials, "Behind Enemy Lines" has the color-drained look and hipper-than-thou feel of David O. ![]() The suspense as Reigart and his impotent crew observe Burnett's ghostly white outline move - and then, horribly, stop moving - against a gray-green screen is as good as movie storytelling gets. I don't know whether the military actually has this capability and I don't care. Next to the breathtaking aerial sequence in which Stackhouse and Burnett try to dodge a couple of heat-seeking missiles, one of the coolest scenes in a film filled with white-knuckle moments is when Reigart and his intelligence officers actually observe - via some kind of satellite-enabled thermal photography - Burnett running on the ground with the Serbs in hot pursuit. Burnett now becomes the hunter's quarry, and with Reigart's hands tied by a NATO-engineered cease-fire that prevents him from helicoptering in and extracting his own man, Burnett is left to fend for himself and flee for neutral territory as his shipmates watch in helpless frustration from afar.Īnd I do mean watch. When Burnett leaves him momentarily, Serbian soldiers, including one very mean paramilitary hit man (Vladimir Mashkov) quickly surround and execute the injured pilot. The plane is shot down, the boys are forced to eject and Stackhouse breaks his leg in a rough landing. With his slight but scrappy physique, broken-looking nose, perpetual smirk and that smart but devilish glint to his almost-too-pretty, cornflower-blue eyes, the actor is more like the half-crazy but likable boy next door than Rambo. Wilson, typically cast in quirky comedic roles, is an unlikely action hero who turns out to be the movie's secret weapon. Soon Burnett discovers exactly why he's being hunted, making his situation-and Reigert's actions-even more perilous.Benefiting from Wilson's straightforward performance and Hackman's typically engaging presence, BEHIND ENEMY LINES proves itself with a solid story (loosely based on real-life events) and excellent action sequences. ![]() There’s no way of catching up with Gumball in the UK (only a small selection of episodes are available on iTunes) other than watching repeats on Cartoon Network and blindly hoping they eventually cover them all. It’s baffling, because a DVD set like this should be a jumping on point for people like me, who are familiar with the show’s reputation and want to try it out. The set is dubbed ‘the first season’, although I can’t find anything online that would suggest the first season was anything other than 36 episodes long. The whodunit episode is a highlight, too, with Gumball’s silliness repeatedly paying off as he chases his bizarre theories to reveal a series of ridiculous truths.Īgain, though, I find myself disappointed with a DVD release from the Cartoon Network. I was also really taken aback and utterly delighted in what I think was, and I absolutely don’t want to know if I’m incorrect, a parody/homage of the hyper-controversial 90s Prodigy music video to the song Smack My Bitch Up in another episode. In it, the boys rightly become obsessed with karate and decide that sort of trying to just do it is way more fun than learning it. Still, few TV shows are without their faults, and most need a period of time to find their feet, and it’s hard to argue that The Amazing World Of Gumball didn’t at least get off to a strong start. The idea is that he’s being lazy, but it just plays as him being cruel and disinterested, and it’s never paid off with a punchline or story resolution. In The Laziest, for example, the story is soured because the episode starts with his two sons wanting to play with him and he refuses to spend time with them. Gumball’s Dad is intended as a big, silly Homer Simpson presence, but it doesn’t always work. What I would criticise the show for, and I should again highlight that I’m only reflecting on the 12 episodes included in the DVD release here, is some of the supporting characters. I wonder if this might be a nod to a childish way of telling stories. That’s not so much a criticism as an observation of how they construct episodes. I expected him to play a part in the episode’s conclusion, to pop back up, but he doesn’t. They convince Lazy Larry to help them, and he features to a point (Gumball and Darwin essentially ruin his life), but then they’re done with him. The Laziest, in which Gumball and Darwin have to find someone lazier than their Dad, is a great example of this. Having one of the students in class as a giant CG Tyrannosaurus Rex, for example, feels like something a child would come up with, and that’s because The Amazing World Of Gumball is essentially a child telling you about their day.Īnother way this show varies from Cartoon Network’s crossover programming is that The Amazing World Of Gumball rarely deals with consequences. ![]() Gumball, the shows main character, is very much a child and the episodes play out like typical childhood experiences (like babysitting a sibling or having to wear embarrassing clothes) filtered through the hyperactive imagination of a kid. I also think the show is able to carry off the simpler storylines because, particularly when compared to Regular Show and Adventure Time, it feels more aimed towards kids. The Amazing World Of Gumball is colourful, inventive and busy. Tonally, the show is light and playful, so the mixed up visual style really fits in with that. There’s a puppet character, CG animations and even an upside-down human mouth/chin. Then, the supporting cast can be anything. The backgrounds are typically real-life environments. Gumball and his family are traditionally animated in 2D. The thing that stands The Amazing World Of Gumball apart from other cartoons is the mix of animation. The stories tend to focus on the escapades of the two boys, who unintentionally wreak havoc wherever they go (which is usually home or school). The show, which has just been released on DVD in the UK (prompting this article, which is based on what the DVD dubs the first season – the first 12 10-minute episodes), focuses on Gumball, a young cat, and his adoptive goldfish brother Darwin. Airing alongside the likes of Adventure Time and Regular Show in the UK, it’s produced in Europe by a team led by series creator Ben Bocquelet. The Amazing World Of Gumball is an animated TV series from the Cartoon Network. The theme song is ridiculously catchy and the busy animation perfectly prepares you for the look of the show. If you were going to judge The Amazing World Of Gumball by its opening credits, though, it’d probably get full marks. In the same way that you’re not meant to judge a book by its cover, it’s probably best to not judge a TV show by its opening credits. Your e-mail will NEVER be shared with anyone. Check out my other presets too! We need to cut lots of annoying resonances to make them mixable (if there’s a word like this).Īs mentioned in the beginning, this is not a “holy” chain that should be followed blindly. We did use lots of EQ unfortunately cause that’s the problem with the digital guitar amps. These subtle changes can help the guitar cut through the mix better. In most of our plugins in this chain, we’re using minimum process with 1db differences. The fact that we’re using all these plugins though does not mean that it’s too much. Final ThoughtsĪs you can see the chain here is pretty overwhelming. Then I removed some mud with a narrow Q and removed some high end.įinally a compressor to kick in only during palm mutes (maximum 1db of Gain Reduction)Īnd some final limiting to kill some transients that’d got nothing musical to offer, just stealing headroom. I boosted some high mids at 3k ( 4db in this case) and a 2db at 200khz to give some body. I a lso removed some annoying resonances. I removed the low and high end to leave room for the bass and the hats. I used my stock multi-band compressor plugin, you can use yours it does not matter which plugin, as long as you can compress a specific frequency band. Here I compressed some of the low mids, to make the palm mutes tighter and more consistent in volume. The reason I am using them is because I am used to their workflow, feel free to use the plugins that you are familiar with. You may see some plugins that you may not own but that’s really not a problem, since you can use stock EQs and compressors to get the job done.
